Canary: All-in-One Home Security review
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Accessories, Smart Home, Product Reviews, Wireless / WiFi,
Where I live, it’s a typical safe neighborhood. Nothing too crazy happens all that often (stolen UPS packages that are left on doorsteps not withstanding.) I do subscribe to Vivint though, a home security service that ties in home automation. Of course, that required a team to come out and install things all over the house—but what if that’s overkill for you? Maybe you live in an apartment or condo, or maybe you just don’t want the monthly bill.
That’s where Best Buy comes in. Rather than shelling out monthly for a monitored home security system, you can now take those matters into your own hands for what I’d consider to be a fair price. Best Buy sent over the Canary Home Security System for me to check out. If you’re unfamiliar, the Canary is an all-in-one unit that you put in a high-traffic area in your home. It’s a small package, but packs in the features.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 review
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Design, PC / Laptop, Software,
Here at Gear Live, reviewing gadgets, putting together gadget photo galleries, and creating image thumbnails for our YouTube videos. The thing is, there isn't much I need to do to make the images look great, and as such, Photoshop has always felt like overkill--a tool that is way more powerful than I need. I recently spent time with the new Adobe Photoshop Elements 14. This is the prosumer version of Photoshop that immediately felt way more accessible upon launching the application than it's more capable big brother.

The Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 is the convertible PC for this holiday season
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: PC / Laptop,
If you're looking for a 2-in-1 convertible notebook to add to your holiday wish list this season, be sure to consider the Toshiba Satellite Radius 12. Built and designed for Windows 10, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 can go from laptop mode over to tablet mode with a quick flip of the display. It sports an amazing 12.5-inch 4K UHD touchscreen, which is one of the best you'll see in this category. On the inside, you'll find an Intel Core i7 processor paired with 8GB RAM, and a blazing fast 256GB SSD.
How to use gadgets for Halloween pranks in your home
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smart Home, Videos,
If you wanna kick up your Halloween festivities, you may be able to do so with some of the smart home gadgets and consumer electronics that you already have in your posession. One example is using your Hue lights to simulate a thunderstorm or fire happening in your home, which I've been enjoying for the past few days. The ambiance can be enjoyed both from inside the house, as well as by people passing by (especially with a connected Bluetooth speaker chiming in with sound effects, pointed outside an open window!)
For more inspiration, Best Buy has compiled five videos that show how you can use different pieces of technology that you can use to put together you own scary holiday scenes. The one I liked most is the Haunted House Wicked Washroom, where you use Philips Hue lights, a Bluetooth speaker with ambient lighting, and Belkin WeMo smart plugs to allow you to turn on plugged in gadgets remotely. Head on over to Best Buy to check out all five video tutorials.

Stop at Best Buy for that Back to School SanDisk flash storage
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Accessories, USB, Storage,
Summer is nearing an end, and back to school season is in full swing. As you shop for those notebooks, backpacks, pencils, and the like, be sure to keep in mind that we live in a digital world where students are expected to become comfortable with technology. Homework now involves the Internet and the usage of tablets and laptops to get the job done. When moving those items around, it’a always good to have a backup, even in the age of cloud storage. SanDisk is always up to the challenge, and I’ve relied on SanDisk digital storage for over a decade when it comes to photography, and external storage.

Let’s talk about the art of buying gifts. These days, in our technology-filled world, lots of people end up wanting some sort of gadget or electronic device when it comes to birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries, and the like. It makes sense, what with everything seemingly able to connect to a smartphone, tablet, PR, or Mac right now—whether it’s a new smartphone or tablet themselves, a home thermometer, tea kettle, camera, game console, and everything in between. Still, it can be a challenge knowing what to get someone for a special day.

3DR Solo Drone with GoPro control features
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Cameras, Toys, Transportation,
It’s no argument that one of the biggest gadget sensations right now. That’s understandable, what with the cool-factor combination of flying a radio-controlled craft and the ability to record footage from places you’d never be able to take your DSLR. Be it for casual fun or business purposes, they’re fun toys (or tools, depending on how you look at it.) Just be sure to be aware of your local laws regarding the flying of drones.

LG G4 hands-on first impressions
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Hot Deals,
When looking at the overall landscape of smartphones in the US, most casual conversation is dominated by talk of Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S—currently that means the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6. The thing is, though, that there are other great phones out there that deserve to be a part of the conversation. Last year, my favorite Android phone was the LG G3, and I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on the successor ever since LG announced it.
As most know, I’m one of the rare people who owns multiple smartphones. I didn’t need the LG G4, but I definitely wanted it. LG sent one over, and I’ve been enjoying the process of learning all the ins and outs of the superb camera. If you’re unfamiliar, LG did a great job differentiating the camera on the G4. It’s got fantastic performance in low light situations thanks to the f/1.8 aperture, and sports a manual mode with 15 settings and over 135 options for configuring the camera to capture just the right shot. Pair that with the laser autofocus that gets things looking great in an instant, and the ability to capture RAW images and you have a winner. Super cool.
